The best way to become a teacher

There are a range of options open to those wishing to get into teaching. Once you have decided which age group and subject you are interested in you need to choose which route to take to get qualified. You can train for a teaching degree at university. You will have at least two school placements during the course as this practical experience is vital for building your class room management skills. Post graduate students can study for a post graduate certificate of education (or PGCE) at university and this is a great way to make a career change. After your degree, you must successfully complete your newly qualified teacher (NQT) year to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS)
If you’re a post graduate and prefer to get stuck into teaching straight away, a school based qualification could be for you. You’ll have a placement at school for the duration of the course, with some time at another school to give a broad experience of teaching. Most courses of this type lead to a PGCE in addition to QTS.
